What is and why Álgebra Lineal?

Álgebra Lineal (Linear Algebra) is a branch of mathematics that is responsible for studying multisystems of linear equations by means of matrices and determinants, as well as vector spaces in both two and three dimensions.

In the musical aspect, Álgebra Lineal is the solo project of mexican drummer, Gabriel "Bony" Martínez.

Gabriel was born in Mexico City and has been active as drummer in the national rock scene since the first third of the 80's, going through groups from urban rock in the 80's such as La Ignoran&cia, Pegaso, and Tráfico Citadino, to later in the 90's to some bands of Hard, Heavy and progressive tendencies such as Áspid, Medusa and Rayenary, the latter two groups with whom a demo and a cassette were recorded in 1999 and 1992 respectively. In the same way, in that decade, together with Jaime García (guitarist of Áspid), he joined the group, Indream, which played meditational music.

Granados and Jaime García (both musicians from Áspid).

¿Why Álgebra Lineal?

Gabriel Martínez: "The Linear Algebra subject is studied during the first courses of the Engineering careers, in the institution that I studied, it was called, Complementos de Matemáticas (Mathematical Complements), and personally I consider that it was the most difficult subject to pass of all the career, which required a great effort to be approved (including an appeal). I found that same effort again when I tried to make a musical material on my own. Getting out of the comfort zone and having to start thinking about and resolving music from the perspective of little-known instruments, once again required a great effort, almost comparable to how tortuous it was to pass the Linear Algebra subject, which is why, as a tribute to that university effort, we decided to baptize this nascent musical project with the name of that subject”.
